Farinelli (born Carol Broschi) was the
legendary 18th century castrato singer who become one of the most celebrated
opera singers of the 18th century.
In the movie young Carlo witnesses another
young man commit suicide after being castrated. After this Carlo told his
father he did not want to die, but his father told him never to withhold
his voice from his older brother Riccardo. Riccardo was a mediocre composer.
The movie then jumps to Carlo as an adult castrato. But he will only sing
what his brother composes, which holds his career back. However, as his
fame grows, and as he learns more (shown to us in flashbacks) of the circumstances
around the "accident" which resulted in his eventual castration, tension
builds between him and Riccardo. There is also an interesting subplot about
a disabled boy who's father is dead. The boy plots to have Farinelli as
his new father (knowing that Farinelli can not have children of his own).
Also in the movie you may also learn more than you care to about Carlo's
ability to have sex even though he was castrated.
Overall I considered the movie mediocre.
The following capture is from the movie trailer include on the DVD. I felt that it was very discriptive of the overall plot.

This movie has four nude scenes. First a nude teenage boy jumps to his death (covering his castrated genitals with his hand). Later there are three sex scenes, first showing one female breast, second showing a male buttock and a woman's breast, the third showing the buttock of two males and the breasts on the woman.
